How Holiday Carols Started

favico1Since our childhood we treasure many memories of Holiday Carols or Christmas Songs. In our childhood we hardly question reliability of these Holiday Carols; we just sing those songs and enjoy the enchanting melody. Legend says, first ever Christmas Carol was sung on the Birth of Christ; almost 2,000 years ago. Though it was around 1200 AD that Saint Francis of Assisi collected entire Holiday Carols and published them in English language so these songs could be understood by everyone.

Initially these Christmas songs were depicted in Latin. However as time passed there was consistent development in the field of these melodious songs or Holiday Carols. Sine the beginning of Christianity many parishioners and Christian leaders took basic steps. As a result a common place was created to facilitate the worship and preaching of Christianity. The primary reason of this place was to provide a place for everyone to sing carols. Christmas songs and holiday carols were the most significant aspect of this religious place.

England and Australia brought this tradition of Christmas Carols to the American culture. Generally, there were many English speaking countries contributing in raising the new American Culture. In 1447, Johannes Gutenberg invented mechanical printing press that made possible for printing and copying of entire holiday carol lyrics. The distribution and printing has made it more popular and people all over United States acknowledged these Christmas songs.

Obviously, it was the era when Christmas and Christianity emerged as a popular religion. Although, in 1649 Cromwell strictly eliminated entire Christian customs and traditions including Christmas and Holiday Carols. However Charles II restored Christian customs and traditions in 1661. Since then Christmas songs became publicly well known and admired.

It was from (1700-1800) the huge contribution came from famous Christmas carols and they are still admired today. For example, in 1742, Frederich Handel sung the popular “Messiah”. Every year many artists and producers try to create many new holiday carols and each year new rhymes take place of older ones. But the fact remain that even after many years we still love to sing “Jingle Bells” and “We wish you a Merry Christmas”.

Holiday Carols are true spirit of festivity and celebrations of Christmas. This year when you gather around the Christmas tree remember these Carols are the essence and the best way to celebrate Christmas. These lyrics have deep rooted history and tradition and we must carry the legacy to next generation.
